Dear Brother & Sister
I came in town this morning with little expectation of meeting with an opportunity of writing to you, but meeting up with too (two) men whose names I do not know, on there (their) way out to Texas, I will write to you , & you cant immagine (imagine) how much pleasure it renders me to meet up with an opportunity of once more writing to you, to let you know how we are getting a long (along) after surviving the great war- horrors of the great struggles of the war that has been hovering over us for the last few years. Mr. Pate, and Whitson, was in the war nearly all the time, and came out sound and safe. In we have all though our side was not victorious we have no room to complain. I meen (mean) we have
not suffered a great deal from the war, we have had plenty to eat and were all the time and ther- (there) fore we ought not to complain. but rather be thankful to have that. I havent time to write much. I wish I had. I could write you a long letter Nothing searrius (serious) has occured in the family I believe since you herd (heard) from us. we are all weel and getting a long (along) tolerably well. Emaline has one child. his name is Luther. Nancy has but one. I have too (two) my oldest is a boy his name is Emmerson my youngest is a girl her name is Johnny, for her Father. Mr. Whitson is talking of going out there, he wanted to go this fall to look at the country, but he cant get off this fall. Will is nearly grown. he is very anxious to go to Texas. in fact we nearly all of us have got the Texas fever.
I will haf (have to) close my short letter. I do wish I had time to write mour (more). Mr. Whitson wishes you to give him a description of that country. give my love to all of the family. I would like so much to ? see you all. ? ? write soon and tell us all the newes (news) we are so anxious to here (hear) from you all direct your letter to Booths point on the Missippips rive (Mississippi River), and I think we will get them Rebecca McDavid
Notes: Mr. Whitson and Mr. Pate are mentioned in Rebecca's Father's letter of October of 1861. Rebecca's first husband was John S. McDavid. He died in December of 1861. See letter of February of 1861. This letter is written after the death of Rebecca's sister, first wife of Elijah Sanders.
