There is a relationship between J. W. Bourland and Benjamin Bourland. A strong circumstantial case can be made that Benjamin and J. W. Bourland are grandchildren of Ebenezer Bourland. For more information see Benjamin Bourland's record. Whether they are brothers, cousins, or uncle-nephew, is not known. The first relationship is one on family name and geography. Second, succeeding generations would know they were related, but that relationship was lost. J W and Benjamin are close enough in age that they could be brothers. If so it is most likely that Benjamin is the older brother born in Kentucky, and then the family relocated to Alabama where J W would be born two years later. But there is no firm evidence on what that relationship would be. Both Benjamin and J W Bourland disappear from the historical record after 1880 and are presumed to have died. Garrett C. Bourland, the eldest son of J W, his Brother William Calvin Bourland, and four of Benjamin Bourland's children will move to Hill County, Texas. Among the kin of Hill County there is family knowledge that the Bourland's of Hill County are related.
The middle name "Washington" comes from the Texas Death Certificate for Williams Calvin Washington which list his Father as "Wash Bourland."
In 1860 the James W. "Bolen" family is living in Tishomingo, Mississippi.
In 1870 J W Bourland family is living in Franklin County, Alabama.
In 1880 Elizabeth is listed living alone and presumably J. W. has died.
