Richard Rowell was born to Ezekiel and Mary Rowell about 1838 in Pike County, Alabama. In 1850 he is listed on the Federal Census with his parents. He married Lucy Jenkins and they are living together with their first son, William Rowell, in Pike County Alabama, in 1860. Living next to Richard is his brother, Joseph and Joseph's wife, Ann.
Richard Rowell joins the Alabama 15th Infantry on January 7, 1861. At the time of his enlistment, his son William is seven months old and his wife is expecting their second child, Mary, who is born seven months later in August of 1861.
On July 2, 1863, the Alabama 15th charged up Little Round Top at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. They are led by Colonel William C. Oates. The attack fails and the end of the Union line holds, anchored by the 20th Main Volunteers under the leadership of Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain.

In September of 1863 R. W. Rowell is listed with Company A of the Alabama 15th. He is injured at Chickamauga, a battle fought in Georgia.
A Union POW record lists Richard Rowell of the Alabama 15th as captured at Richmond on April 8, 1865. He is taken to the POW camp at Point Lookout Maryland where he dies three months later in July. The day after his capture, Robert E. Lee surrenders his army at Appomattox.
