May Hamilton

When I first saw this picture I thought it was picture of my Grandmother Tempie, daughter of May Hamilton Humphrey. It comes from an album Grandmother Tempie kept and is found on a page of photos of her parents. The resemblance between May Hamilton and my Grandmother Tempie who I would know as a Teenager and young man is striking.

This is my great grandmother as I remember her. At this time she was Great Grandmother Cullar. Though advanced in years, it was clear from her conversations that her mind was a sharp as ever, and sometimes her tongue too. She once told me my hair was too long. This was in the seventies when I had hair. Then she said, "but I suppose that is the way young people wear their hair now" and that was end of it. She spoke her mind, made her point, accommodated differences of opinions, and moved on.

Miss Hamilton was her own person. A family story is that she went to hear a Campbellite preacher against the dire warning of her Baptist parents. She went to the meeting and was baptized. Later her family, including her parents, would be baptized and become Campbellites themselves. By the way, she married that Campbellite preacher, J J Humphrey.
