Mary Rowell was the second child of Richard and Lucy Rowell. She was born in 1861 about the time her Father joined the Alabama 15th. During the War, Richard Rowell was capture and died in the Union POW camp at Point Lookout Maryland.
By 1870 Mary's Mother has remarried. Her second husband is Isaah Raughton and the family is living in Bullock County, Alabama in 1870. The family includes Mary and her half-brother Wiley Eugene Raughton. The family is living in Alabama at least until 1885 when Nina Raughton is born. Sometime berfore 1892 the Family has moved to Texas, because Mary meets and marries Hezekiah Gilbert Carlton in 1892 in Jones County, Texas. Hezekiah is a Civil War veteran and twenty-seven years older than Mary.
In 1900 Hezekiah and Mary Carlton are living in Jones County, Texas. The marriage produces five children. Eva, the youngest, is born three years before Hezekiah's death in 1905
Mary manages her family and raises the children, never remarrying. In 1910 Mary Carlton, now a widow, is living in Jones County with all five children. Mary Carlton and three of her children are living in Jones County in 1920. Gilbert and Tula are now married and out of the home. By 1930 Mary has relocated to Wichita Falls, where she is living with son and daughter-in-law Gilbert and Iva Carlton. Also in the home is Erma Carlton.
In 1937 Mary dies in Jones County, six miles east of Anson. She is 75 years old. She is buried at the Bethel Cemetery in Funston, Jones County, Texas, next to her husband.
