Francis Marion
Francis Marion was popular name following the American Revolution. The namesake, Francis Marion, was a war hero of the American revolution, well at least to Americans he was a war hero. The British held other opinions. He was plantation owner, and representative in the state house at the time of the revolution. Prior to the American Revolution he served in the Indian wars were atrocity were committed and there is some evidence he was haunted by these atrocities. Francis Marion was known as the "Swamp Fox." He fought successfully using guerilla tactics. Now this may sound a lot like the leading character, Benjamin Martin, from the 2000 film The Patriot, staring Mel Gibson. So it is that Francis Marion was the inspiration for the fictitious character Benjamin Martin.
